SPCA Visit

On Monday, the SPCA visited Rata to teach us about what they do to help animals in the community and what we can do as pet owners to make sure our pets are happy and healthy. We also got to meet Tilly the puppy, a beautiful dog living at the SPCA right now. We got to pet her and say hello.

Ali and Ella's Visit

Today Rata got to meet a very lovely seeing eye dog! Ali is blind and Ella, her black labrador, is her guide dog. We learnt about how Ella helps Ali, who trains seeing eye dogs, where they can and can't go together (like the zoo!), and how Ella spends her time when she's not working.

Here some photos from her visit:

New Learning: Sustainability and Why Earth is Special

This week Rata 4 has been learning about why the Earth is special and why we need to take care of it. We read Dr. Seuss's The Lorax and talked about how we could take care of the Truffala seeds:

Then we watched some videos to learn about what makes the Earth unique, and came up with a chart of what we'd learned:

We finished off by talking about what we can do to help take care of the Earth:
Next we'll be remembering what we know about the sun and thinking about why it is important to Earth.

Learning Why We Need the Sun

For the next two weeks, Rata 4 will be learning a bit about why the sun is important to Earth. This is important for learning about sustainability and how the Earth works--especially plants! This is great, because we just learned with Harold the Giraffe about how our bodies use oxygen and make carbon dioxide. Here's a video we'll be discussing in class about the sun and plants:

Learning about Directions

This week Rata 4 spent some time looking at mazes to learn about how to give directions. We talked about position and direction, and then problem-solved how to map a series of movements we made. We worked with a buddy using a variety of different materials to figure out what shape we made. Here are some of photos of our work. Check out our Maths wall in class for more!
