On Wednesday morning, teachers, students, and the community formally opened the new learning spaces at Papakowhai School. Mr. Kairua performed a karakia, and important contributors were acknowledged and thanked. Here are some photos from the occasion.
This week Rata started training for the school cross country competition which, whether permitting, will take place in week 3. Children are encouraged to wear shoes that are easy to run in so that on days we get out for a little run, they can feel comfortable and successful. This activity is about encouraging the kids to enjoy running and exercise with only a tiny bit of competitive spirit, please help your children understand all the different benefits and types of success we can have this way!

Yesterday we had our first session of the term with Mr. Kairua. Rata 4 was particularly on point, remembering lots of greetings, songs, and how to say "haere mai" to different numbers of people (1, 2, and many). We also did the twist in te reo! It was a fun session.

Today we were very lucky! Alex's mum, Sue, told us about some beautiful trees near the school where we could see hundreds of monarch butterflies perched. So Rata 1 and 4 walked over together and looked at the butterflies, talked about why they might be there and the butterfly life cycle (caterpillars and cocoons!), and then imitated their beautiful flying. When we got back to close we wrote about the butterfly trees.

On Tuesday we had an assembly. Rata shared some work and did some reading and singing. Our newest students were also welcomed to the school by a big buddy and Mr. Smith, and two lucky students received certificates for excellence in relating to others. Here's a slideshow of our assembly!
