Maths: Geometry and Measurement

Last week, we worked with a partner to build a house that would fit one of our class monkeys, Grandpa Jack (named by Harry). We were learning about the words we use to describe size, how to build with a variety of different materials, and how we could measure the house to make sure Grandpa Jack would fit.

First, we used pieces of paper to create a flat space that Grandpa Jack would fit on. We tested our different arrangements and talked about which were better. Then, we found things we could measure Grandpa Jack's height with to make sure his house was tall enough (we settled on our printing pencils!). Then we had a series of different building challenges: using the most blocks, using the least blocks, and a few others. Here are some photos from our cool maths!

Assembly Monday

Just a reminder that there will be an assembly on Monday for Rimu and Totara to share their work. Rata's newest students--Prestige, Isabelle, Lucy, and Quinn--will be welcomed to their whanau group and the school by a big buddy and receive a certificate from Mr. Smith. Two "Key Competency" Certificates will also be presented to students showing exceptional ability to manage themselves (our key competency focus these past weeks). All parents are welcome to join us in the hall at 2pm on Monday!

School Cross Country

Yesterday we had a great time at the school cross country! It was a bit gusty, but the kids ran wonderfully and were awesome cheerers for the rest of the school.  Here are some photos:

An Active Start to May!

We've got lots going on at the beginning of next week! Weather permitting, our school cross country competition will be on Monday. The junior school will be running on the bottom field after lunch, but feel free to come out and cheer our seniors on after morning tea! Please make sure your child is wearing comfortable running shoes so they can enjoy the day fully, and it'd be a good idea to consider sunblock and lots of layers as we'll be outside for much of the day.

Also, this Tuesday we will be starting gymnastics with moveMprove! Our sessions our start first thing in the morning and continue every Tuesday for 8 weeks. So your child can enjoy it fully, we suggest comfortable, easy to move in clothing, such as leggings and track pants, rather than skirts or jeans.
