KiVa Launch at Aotea Lagoon

Yesterday we had our KiVa launch party at Aotea Lagoon. The kids did a great job walking safely to the lagoon and had a wonderful time playing and getting their faces painted. They even had ice blocks!

First Week of Swimming

Rata has been having an amazing time swimming this week with EasySwim. Here are some photos from our week:

Swimming! on PhotoPeach
If the video isn't working, please try here

Also, please note that because of the KiVa launch picnic on Thursday, we will NOT having swimming that day. Instead, we will have a makeup session this Friday. Please remember your togs on Friday!

Road Safety

On Monday, we went on a road safety walk with Rata tahi and Rata toru. We talked about how we cross safely, as you can see in our photos as everyone demonstrates stopping, looking, listening, and linking hands. Now we're ready to walk to the lagoon on Thursday!

Also check out Ruben, the Road Safety Bear!

Swimming starts on Monday! Please remember to bring your child's togs, towel, and goggles in a named bag. Also please try to choose clothes that are easy for your child to get in and out of so that they have a good time before and after swimming as well!

Science in Rata 4

Because we've been so excited about our swan plants this week, we've been learning about caterpillar life cycles and how plants absorb water. Here is a photo of the lovely chrysalis that Jenna brought to class and our celery experiment, complete with control celery! Next week we'll start to learn about why they're changing colour.

Swan Plants

On Friday, Mrs. C brought some beautiful baby swan plants to school for Rata. We planted them together and will learn to take care of them over the coming weeks. Here are some cool photos from our afternoon planting!

Also, Jenna was kind enough to bring in a beautiful branch with a monarch butterfly chrysalis attached. We'll track in closely over the coming days to see how it changes!

Social Skills: Respect

To start off our year, we will be talking about how we show respect to ourselves, our family, friends, and teachers, and to our school and home. Here's a cute video to share with your child about respect:

Throughout the year, we will continue developing our social skills program in lots of different ways!

Te Reo with Mr. Kairua

Today we had our first te reo session with Mr. Kairua. We learnt that the sun is called "Tama Nui te Ra" in te reo Maori and started practising a song about it. Hopefully we'll have a video of our singing next time!

Also, a reminder that powhiri invitations went home this week. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Printing in Rata 4

Rather than diving right into letter formation this week, we're focusing on building muscle strength in our writing arms and hands and developing fine motor skills. Here are some photos from one of our pre-printing activities that was inspired by our "Bubbles" big book (we're missing Amelie's photo because she was our demonstrator--next time!).

Sun Smart Buzz Groups

Yesterday Rata got into our buzz groups again yesterday to think about what it means to be sun smart. We came up with ideas like:
- Staying in the shade
- Wearing sunblock
- Wearing sun hats and sunglasses
- Wearing t-shirts to protect our skin
- Drinking lots of water

Welcome to Rata 4!

Kia ora and welcome to Rata 4! I am excited to meet you and the children on their first day of school, always a special though emotional day. Rata block (classes 1-4) will be working together a lot this week to help the children feel comfortable and happy as we ease into the unique and wonderful challenges of starting their journey at school.

Here are a few tips to help the first few days go smoothly:
- Arrive early so they can have some settling time before you need to leave
- Bring your child into the classroom and encourage them to explore with you
- Make sure they have their drink bottle (water only, please) and brainfood (fruit or vegetables only, please) in the classroom (there are boxes for these with their names on them) to avoid disruptions/unsettling later in the morning
- Explain that when the bell rings, that it's time for your child to say goodbye and sit on the mat

At the end of the day, I will bring the children out after the bell rings. I release the children once I see the person who is picking them up. Please let me know if this will be a friend, neighbour, or sibling! Also please wait outside until we come out, it can be very upsetting for children to see their parents but not be allowed to run out to them.

There are lots of fun things in store for the term already: gardening, art, swimming, softball, maybe a field trip! Not to mention all the wonderful learning your child will be accomplishing in their first classroom.

Looking forward to a great term,
