Learning about Volume

This week we've been talking about how we measure volume. We talked about how volume measures how much a container can hold, or how much fits inside of something. We built houses with a buddy for the little old lady from A Squash and A Squeeze, then counted how many Unifix cubes could fit inside.

Measuring the Volume

Emily and Rahat's house had the greatest volume, and Logan, Heidi, and Will's had the smallest volume.

Julia Donaldson, the author of A Squash and A Squeeze, is our Author of the Moment. If you'd like the share A Squash and A Squeeze together at home, there's a great song version of it!

We had a great time at gymnastics this week! We learnt how to land safely on our hands, played a fun warm up game, and practiced lots of tricky skills during our station rotation:

Cross Country!

We had a great time at cross country today!

Here are some (slow motion!) videos from the start of the year 1 girls' and boys' races. We'll post some photos from the finish line soon!

Popcorn making!

Yesterday we made popcorn in class! We measured the kernels and weighed them. We found out that the popcorn was heavier than the kernels. It was lots of fun!

Tomorrow we will learn about how the kernels get turned into popcorn by getting hot.

Yesterday we visited the Rata gardens to see how our vegetables were doing. We're looking forward to making some healthy soup later this term!

Our First Gymnastics!

Rata 4 wrote this together:

We went to the hall for gymnastics. It was fun! We learned to use the bars, the trampoline, how to do forward rolls, handstands, and dribbling the ball. We did hopscotch too. We learned how to do a motorbike landing. Motorbike landings are important so we don't hurt our feet and our knees. Motorbike landings are quiet.

Our Warm-up

This is our slow motion motorbike landing.

Making butter and toast!

Today we had so much fun making butter and toast in our classroom!

To make the butter, we put marbles, salt, and cream in a plastic container. Then we shook it really hard, and then it turned to butter! We made guesses about whether the cream or the butter would be heavier, and it turned out the butter was a little bit later! We also found out that butter takes up more space in the container than the cream did.

After that, we made toast! We talked about what the bread smelt, looked, felt, and sounded like before it was toasted, then we talked about what it was like afterwards. We took turns buttering our pieces of bread, then got to eat it all up! Yum!
