Kia ora! Welcome to Rata 4!

Just in case your communication book ever goes astray, here is a copy of the term 1 Rata 4 newsletter.

We have an exciting term ahead. Here are some of the things we’ll be working on:

Oral Language: Our focus is on developing confidence in speaking, listening, and questioning skills

Reading: Children will have school readers to take home everyday and, starting this week, Letterland cards to practise.  On Fridays, children will also bring home a poem to read.

Library: We visit the school library on Wednesdays and your child will be issued two books to bring home. Please remember to return the library books by the following Wednesday so your child can get new books out.

Writing: We will be working on writing personal recounts. We will be learning to:
  • think of ideas for writing
  • learn the correct letters and sounds
  • leave finger spaces
  • hear and record sounds

Spellings: For spelling, we are revising the sounds and letters of the alphabet.

Maths: Our focus this term is Number and Statistics. We will be learning to:
  • count to 20 and beyond
  • know before and after numbers to 20
  • reading and ordering numbers to 20
  • making and interpreting pictograms

Handwriting: We will be focusing on the correct formation of letters and numbers, and ensuring we can identify upper case/capital letters and lower case/small letters accurately.

Bringing toys, valuables, etc. to school: We ask that children do not bring toys and  valuables to school—they can get lost, broken, or be distracting. If children would like to bring something for sharing, favourite books, photos, or drawings are a good choice.

Please email me if you have any questions or would like more information about the school or your child’s learning: laura at
While I will always respond as soon as possible, I can only read emails before and after school. Please direct any urgent communications to the school office at 233 8321.

Thanks for your support!
